Where is the Steve Jobs of The Gospel?

October 7, 2011

Apple Founder and Chairman Steve Jobs didn’t invent the mp3 player. Or the computer. Or the cell phone. But, what did he do? He re-imagined the mp3 player, the computer, and the cell phone to such an extent that when that vision was actually come to fruition, it changed peoples’ lives. They caught on to the vision (quite literally) and it was made plain to them in a way that they believed in, bought in to and were amazed and impacted daily by the vision once realized. The mp3 player, computer and cell phone were already there, as is the good news of all that Jesus Christ did for us is and has been for 2,000+ years. But where is the guy or gal that is bringing a revolutionary message that people can catch on to? Not physically, like we hold on to an iphone, but felt in all aspects of our daily living. Why does it feel like the church is still dealing with eight track tape players and rigged up 1950s-era telephones? Wherever that guy or gal is, I would follow them in a heartbeat. Until then, we all should try to be them.

RIP Mr. Jobs

“Today, I quit being a Christian”

August 5, 2010

“Today, I quit being a Christian.”

With those words last week on Facebook, Anne Rice delivered a wake-up call for organized religion. The question is whether it will be recognized as such.

“I remain committed to Christ as always,” she wrote, “but not to being ‘Christian’ or to being part of Christianity. It’s simply impossible for me to ‘belong’ to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten years, I’ve tried. I’ve failed. I’m an outsider. My conscience will allow nothing else.”

Willing to Lay down Your Life? – Missions Part 1

December 29, 2009

For our next feature series on the blog, we’ll be taking a look at missions. There was a story in today’s AJC about a missionary who is described as “unusually serious” about his Christian faith, and focused on North Korea. I wonder if we realize how much danger can be involved when God leads us on certain mission assignments. Recently, there was a story about a youth group from Georgia that was in Honduras when political fighting broke out. If God was leading you into a place like North Korea, what would you do? The story, which is linked below, is about Robert Park, a Korean-American who has been detained by North Korean officials. Park’s pastor said this about him:

The Rev. John Benson, the pastor of Life in Christ Community Church in Park’s hometown of Tucson, Arizona, said Park’s devotion is exceptional. “You have to understand that for this guy, when it comes to the Lord, he’s very, very serious,” said Benson, who led weekend services to pray for his safe return. “Unusually serious.” Park’s father, Pyong Park, described him as fearless and said he was willing to lay down his life. “He was not afraid to die,” said the elder Park, who lives in Encinitas, California. “What he wanted was the whole world to know of North Korea’s situation.”

I read an article in the ajc a few weeks ago about a high school football team that was banned from running through a banner quoting a Bible verse before football games. The image above is of one of the banners in question. I thought this was very interesting?

The AJC also blogged about it here: http://tinyurl.com/ybj9zzk

Christians in Iraq

May 14, 2009

A few months back, we posted a story about the growth and challenges of being a Christian in China. I recently read a few stories that described what it was like to be a Christian in Iraq. I’m telling you, we’ve got it good here. Relatively speaking, we have no excuses. Thousands of Christians in Iraq are fleeing for their lives and safety, rather than deny Christ in cities like Mosul, which we hear so much about. Let’s be in prayer for our Christian brothers and sisters in Iraq, as well as the soldiers.

There Is No Recession!

January 27, 2009

**Newsflash! Breaking News!!** There is No Recession!  You won’t hear this from the President, the Senate or Congress, but it’s true.  There is no recession because we believe in The Kingdom of God, and there could never be a recession in The Kingdom.

I wish I could take credit for this note, but I heard it on the Coco-Brother Live Show last night.  That’s right, on the same day that over 71,000 jobs were lost, Coco proclaimed that there was no recession, and during his entire three hours on the air, had business owners and hiring managers calling in with job openings. Remember during these times, Philippians 4:19: “And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. “
