Live From Annual Conference!!

Margaret Freeman, Conference Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries

Guest Blogger: Margaret Freeman

Hello LaGrange District, my name is Margaret Freeman, and I am the Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries for the North Georgia Conference. Our conference Young Adult Committee is hosting on-site visits, highlighting several ministry settings throughout North Georgia that are intentionally connecting with young adults. We have listed some findings from those site visits. So far, we have been to Quest UMC and Dunwoody UMC. Upcoming visits include St.Paul/Grant Park UMC on Sept. 27 and Impact UMC on Nov. 8. We are continuing to build exciting ministries with Young Adults and would love to hear from you about your ideas for ministry! You can contact me at mfreeman@ngumc.org. You can see more information on site visits at the following link: http://brt.ngumc.org/pages/detail/753.

Annual Conference has been very interesting so far. As a first timer, I would refer to it as a learning experience. You really get to see the many workings of the UMC, and the many opportunities as well. We’ve run into some great people from both inside and outside of our district. Hopefully, they will share some words with us on the blog soon. In the meantime, keep track with us session by session at http://twitter.com/lagrangedist, and also streaming live at www.ngumc.org/ac2009. Later.

Prodigal

June 10, 2009

For our next feature in our We Want You series, we’re spotlighting some of our home grown talent from the LaGrange District. Formed in 2003, the band Prodigal was birthed during a few jam sessions in band member Greg’s basement. The band is comprised of members of Cokes Chapel UMC, Cornerstone UMC and Newnan First UMC. Prodigal strives to offer a message of God’s Boundless Love to all of creation through music and witness. All members of Prodigal believe that humanity has fallen short of the life God intends for us; and much like the Prodigal Son, we all need to return home to our Father and ask for His forgiveness. Need a live Christian band? Now you know who to contact! Is there any more talent out there in the LaGrange District? We want to hear from you and give you the spotlight on the blog!! Here are a couple of samples of Prodigal:

Ask A Pastor – Is Secular Music OK? Response

June 8, 2009

We are pleased to have Chris Mucha, Director of Youth Ministry at Fayetteville First UMC and LaGrange District Youth Coordinator, to answer the following question that was sent in:

Dear Pastor, I have always been a big fan of music. I have always listened to music all day, every day while driving, doing homework, and everything. Now that I am a Christian, a lot of the secular music I used to listen to doesn’t agree with my spirit. My question is, as a Christian, is it okay to listen to secular music? Thank you.

Chris Mucha of Fayetteville First UMC

Dear LaGrange District Young Adult, I am a huge music lover!  I grew up in a culture of the beginnings of rap and hip hop music and began to face the same concerns you are having.  First of all, let me say that it is not my place to define what is ok or not for being a Christian.  I will leave that up to Jesus.  More specifically, I believe that everything good in this world comes from God, whether secular, or “Christian”.   There is secular music that has some beautiful messages and there is Christian music that comes from ill heart.  I also dislike the Christian label on music as it infers that we are separate, or “better”, than things non-Christian.  It also broods our consumerism to convince you to buy “Christian” goods and services.   So I think good music is good music regardless.  If the music doesn’t agree with your spirit, that is a different issue.  I think as we continue to strive for spiritual growth we need to stay away from things that hinder that growth.  Only you can decide what those things are for you.  I hope that answers your question!

YIC (Yours In Christ),
Chris

Ask A Pastor – Is Secular Music OK?

One category on this blog is called “Ask A Pastor.” It is similar to a “Dear Abby” column. District young adults and others can send in issues and questions about life, marriages, work, etc. and a Pastor from our district will offer a thoughtful perspective on the issue from a Biblical point of view.

Thank you.
